So what’s the difference in organic and all-natural? Here’s an explanation from the FDA’s website to hopefully make it a little clearer for you.
- Organic: “Crops must be grown without using synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes, petroleum-based fertilizers and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. Organic livestock must have access to the outdoors and be given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic foods may not be irradiated.”
- Natural: “The term ‘natural’ applies broadly to foods that are minimally processed and free of synthetic preservatives; artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors and other artificial additives; growth hormones; antibiotics; hydrogenated oils; stabilizers; and emulsifiers. Most foods labeled natural are not subject to government controls beyond the regulations and health codes that apply to all foods.”
What are GMOs?
- GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit.Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.

Sounds complicated, huh?
So, if you go through those definitions again, with non-organic and unnatural “food” in mind, it means that your “food” may have been made with the use of synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes, petroleum-based fertilizers and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. Your dairy products and meats have growth hormones and antibiotics in them. And your “food” has been treated with ionizing radiation. The list goes on. Your “food” most likely has synthetic preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors, additives, hydrogenated oils, stabilizers, and emulsifiers.
What is happening here? Countries all over the world have demanded that their food be made without these harmful additives and methods, and we just sit back and eat junk, slowly getting bigger and sicker. When are we going to wake up and take a stand against this?
When we buy organic and all-natural products, we are telling the FDA that we prefer that our food be real! Will you join me?
